THE KITTEN TRAGEDY:
by Jean Cranmer-Dobbins: The gray mother and 6 kittens started out with some upper respiratory problems that they seemed to recover well from. They all looked good and were eating a playing when I left for a week's vacation on Aug 28. During that week, five of the kittens died. They became ill and died within a day or two of becoming ill from what I understand. Ray was holding two when they died and another volunteer, Laura, was holding one. Ray buried three and took two to the vet for autopsy. The little girl that is left is on the fense. She is sick, skinny, weak but is eating well.

by Jeanne Lesko: Just as Jean (Cranmer-Dobbins) said they were small when they came in but seemed to be doing well, nursing and playing. Momma weaned them and within a week they started to fail. They just stopped eating. We know they did not have felv, fiv or distemper. They had been given a dose of the intranasal vaccine for panleuk. Besides which their symptoms were not those of panleuk. We sub q'd, syringe fed and did all we could to keep these babies alive, it just wasn't enough. They had such a bad start and I am sure the mom had horrible prenatal care, probably not enough to eat since she was very thin when we brought her in. I am convinced that they had fading kitten syndrome, a somewhat nebulous disease but I cannot attribute their death to anything else. I know that other rescue groups have had the same thing happen with kittens so we aren't the only ones. It is very sad as we were trying to give them a chance, they were darling babies. Some things just aren't meant to be no matter how hard we try. Ray, Laura, Linda Springer and Maggie Jaye worked very hard to save them. We are having a necropsy done and should know more, hopefully today. Jeanne.
09/14/04 by Ray Wills: Remaining kitten is still with us, weak, but eating. No results from necropsy yet.
