Millersville MD: January, 2004

Ray Wills, Marion Hosmer & Laura successfully rescued seven cats from a derelect house off Veteran's Highway.
Ray made these reports:
01/21/04: House is abandoned, stuff strewn everywhere. Basement is unlocked, door open. Door to rest of house locked.
There were 6 cats there this afternoon: 4 black, 1 dilute, & 1 Siamese mix. One of the blacks is lame on rear leg; dilute looks old & sick. All were very hungry; the bolder ones practically attacked the food. I set up a crude feeding station on the remnants of the back porch, which is rotted out in places. One has to be very careful where he steps. I put down dry, wet, & water.
It`s a pathetic situation. The least we should do, in my view, is establish regular feeding there. None would let me touch them, but a couple ate close to me. They do have access to shelter in the basement. It would be good if you, & perhaps Marion, could go by there to see for yourselves. We could then evaluate our options, including doing nothing. GP should see it also. House is 1/2 mile from Veterans Hwy on right; red brick front w/ white trim. Lemme know what you all think. Any volunteers for feeding?

01/22/04: This afternoon Laura, Marion & I met at the house and without much difficulty removed the seven cats we knew to be abandoned there. There will have to be occasional visits to be sure there weren't some slackers hiding in the woods. A property check done by an anonymous state employee revealed the house to be a rental; owner lives in N. Carolina. Five of the cats are female; Five are black; all are adults, a couple aged. All can be handled. Back at the Arnold shelter, Laura & I applied Frontline to each cat. One of the males is a huge Siamese with both ears damaged by ear mites. All will be going to spay/neuter Monday morning.......and then ?
