OUR PROGRAM:
Maryland Animal Advocates, Inc. (MAA) is an all-volunteer charitable organization.
We are rescuing homeless and abandoned cats in the geographical area from Timonium to Annapolis, MD.
Since Fall, 1997 many hundreds of our rescued cats have received Complete Veterinary Care (Our Vet Care) at
Dr. Kaufman and Eastern AH are great supporters of MDSPCA.
We provide Our Vet Care for tame cats and kittens before placement in family homes.
Our veterinary medical provider for abandoned tame cats and kittens is:
Dick & Ray provide medical care for the rescues in Anne Arundel County. Cats-R-Us provides low cost sterilization
with a grant from PetsMart and displays their rescued cats at PetsMart-Annapolis,MD.
Many abandoned cats return to a wild state when left outside for a long duration. Mommy cats can bear kittens who never know a human home. These two groups are often call "feral" or "free-roaming" cats. Whenever possible we transition these cats to a private property setting where they have safe shelter and daily care. However, responsible families with these barns and sheds are difficult to locate. In those cases, we practice TTVARM- Trap, Test, Vaccinate, Alter, Release and Manage. MAA provides complete veterinary care for these cats. We maintain these troupes of cats in their home area. These are called "feral colonies." MAA provides complete veterinary care for every individual from medical tests to baths, sterilization and vaccination. These troupes are visited everyday for feed and monitoring.
OUR CORPORATION:
MAA is a membership corporation open to the public. An elected Board of Directors consisting of five organization members governs our policies, operations and finances.
From the beginning, MAA wished to embrace an egalitarian spirit among people. MAA does not have a president but, instead, has an Executive Committee consisting of three members of the Board. We have only two Officers: Secretary and Treasurer. Our by-laws prohibit Board Members from receiving a salary or wages paid by MAA.
Our current Board of Directors are:

City. Bushy Beatrice was abandoned with a bowl of kibble and
water. She still lives with Herb and family plus many other rescues in Baltimore.
Herb is an employee of Neighbor Care Home Medical Equipment as a bookkeeper
since April 1997.

OUR HISTORY:
MAA was formed on July 16, 1994 when a small group of animal protection activists held a leafleting evening in Little Italy, Baltimore City. We spoke with pedestrians concerning the plight of young calves who spend their short lives chained in wooden stalls. These little cows soon become veal.
Our original mentors were Rona Hankin and Martha Gagnan, Ph.D. of Howard County who advised Jackie Smith and Tia Dunn on creating the Organization. They assembled
a group of eighteen people who met at The Animals' Agenda Magazine on Elliott St in Canton, Baltimore City on August 13, 1994 and agreed to formally incorporate MAA. The purpose was to educate the general public regarding the natural kingdom and the challenges of our world. We chartered the organization in the State of Maryland on August 23, 1994.
Rona's husband, Ed, obtained our TIN and incorporation application. Mr. Hankin passed away several years ago after a brief onset of leukemia. He was a wonderful and loving man.
Mrs. Hankin moved to Seattle.
Once the Corporation was chartered, we applied for I.R.S. status as a publicly supported charitable organization. On June 25, 1995 we were extended the Five year Advance Ruling Period Status as a 501( c ) 3 organization. In September 1999, We re-applied and were granted Permanent 501 ( c ) 3 Status.
